this is what long covid feels like [CW: body horror illustration, occasional art nudity]

The figure is against a blue-purple backdrop. Their body has dark teal areas colored in, including the shoulders, lower abdomen, right wrist, left thigh, and a few other joints. There are also areas of concentric rings in super saturated magenta, purple, and extremely dark almost-black yellow. These areas include three in the face, the arm pits, right groin, left wrist, left knee, and left ankle. The concentric circles evoke pulsing or throbbing, while the more smoothly rendered dark teal shapes feel in comparison deeper and more static, like bruised areas or deep muscle pain.

Thankful to Kelly The Disabled Ginger for writing and affirming that chronic illness can be severely impacted by stress.

I used to be one of those people who thrived under pressure, who loved to problem-solve and create against a clock. Regardless of how healthy those situations, let alone my my perfectionistic, over-achieving history which sought them out was, it has been shocking to see how quickly and how severely my body breaks down under stress now. I have gone from stress being an instigation of “I feel alive!” to “I cannot live like this.”

I hope if you are struggling that you can find ease and kindness. I hope you can feel connected. I hope that you can learn and practice the 20 Lessons from the 20th Century. I highly recommend the graphic novel edition of On Tyranny for people with ADHD, brain injury/fog, etc. Its images have stuck with me, and have helped me better integrate the learnings than I would have from a text-only book.
